The Mystery Behind the Ring sound effect used on cash registers solved?

In the US various gas stations use cash registers that play the infamous Ring sound effect from the classic Sonic games every time a product is rang up. Some people probably stopped and thought “Why does the ring sound effect play?” Youtuber Nexpo who typically reports on disturbing things around the internet and other internet mysteries made a short video going into why he believes these cash registers use the ring sound effect. While it might be true, his speculation hasn’t been 100% proven. Still it’s interesting to see someone who rarely reports on video games bring this to people’s attention. Why do you think these cash registers use the sound effect?
